Hunter & Wolfe
2012-02-10
I had the pleasure of catching up-and-coming duo, and good friends, Mike Maffei and Sundeep Kapur's band, Hunter & Wolfe, at the Cake Shop in NYC last week. It's no joke that I shoot a lot of live music, but something about photographing two extremely talented musicians performing for a Monday crowd of approximately five people reiterated in my mind what it is I love so much about rock and roll.
I mentioned that I shot in a near-empty venue to a friend of mine, who scoffed at the idea of photographing something so mundane. I think maybe that person is missing the point entirely of what it is to experience live music. Now, this isn't the first time I've been to a concert with less than 10 people present, but it is easily my favorite "small-crowd show." Thanks to the inherent intimacy, I really had the chance to vibe out to Mike's soft and beautiful vocals and watch the duo's unmistakeable dynamic unfold on stage. It should be noted that this was only their 2nd or 3rd show ever.
Opening for Hunter & Wolfe was another talented New Brunswick-grown musician, Travis Bilenski (third image). Hunter and Wolfe just dropped their first EP last week, give it a listen here and take Travis' music for a spin here.
